Irish Alfa Romeo owners now have a new club that will proudly fly the serpent at events this year. No longer will owners have to arrive and park under the flag of Italian cars, or be directed to the “other cars” parking at an event. Alfa Romeo Owners’ Club Irelandhas been formed by a number of enthusiasts who will participate in a variety of diverse events around Ireland. In this first year, a trip to the Capri Club Irelandtrack day in MondelloParkon the 28th of April is planned, while an altogether different experience will be the more sedate but hugely-popular Norman Pratt Run in Co. Meath on the 6th of May. The event that really kickstarted the renewed interest in forming an Alfa Romeo owners club was the huge Alfa Romeo display at Classic Car Live two years ago; supported by Irish Vintage Scene Magazine, Ireland’s “mini Goodwood” will again take place in Mondello Park this year on the 17th of June. For those that like to display their cars in the nicest of surroundings, the Irish Classic & Vintage Motorshow in Terenure College, Dublin on the 8th of July will feature a special club display. Finally, an Alfa Romeo-only weekend away is planned for October, with details to be announced shortly. These events offer something for everyone, and will hopefully bring out all those Alfa owners who have long waited for their own club. For further information, contact Gordon Rowland on 086 8150620 or email arocireland@gmail.com. Picture Alfa

The first few months of the year host some of the best autojumbles all over the country. The season started off with the Abbeyshrule event run by the Lakeland Vintage Club, and this year’s jumble was without doubt one of the largest in recent years, with the indoor section packed to capacity and outdoor stalls extending beyond the village. Edre Mills, who organises the event, stated that it was great to see such a crowd attending, and after having two bad years due to poor weather conditions the mild day was very welcome. Next up was Taughmaconnell, another one well-established on the calendar; the day started off wet, but this didn’t deter visitors and, from early in the morning, there was a steady flow of customers for the many autojumblers in attendance. While this issue is at print the Fermoy Bring & Buy event will take place, while next up on the 19th of February is the Shrule & District Vintage Club event at Shrule, Co. Galway, one of the longest-established events in Ireland and a favourite with enthusiasts from all over. Just the following weekend, on the 26th of February, will be the Western Vintage Tractor & Engine Club’s autojumble at Roundfort, Co. Mayo. Then it’s northward to Ballinagh, Co. Cavan where the Breffni Vintage Club will hold their Autojumble, Vintage & Classic Sale on the 11th of March. This is a great event, and the welcome one receives is worth the trip alone. Towards the end of March, on the 30th the Kilkenny Vintage & Classic Sale & Autojumble will take place, which continues to grow each year. The following day, the 1st of April will see jumblers heading to the capital for the Classic Car Show/Sale & Autojumble in Swords; while this event runs twice a year, the April event always proves to be the bigger one, and is not to be missed. Photo Auto Jumble: Not only are autojumbles a place to get the part you need to get your classic up and running, they are also a great social opportunity to meet like-minded enthusiasts over a cup of tea. This event marks the closing of the show season for many, and time to get a few bits for the garage to carry out planned repairs during the winter months. The array of items for sale at this event is usually very varied, with a headlight for an early 1920s Rolls-Royce beside a taillight for a 1980 Mini on one table last year. There is always a great variety of autojumble at the event that includes parts, tools, books, models and much more, and I’m sure that anyone who has ever attended this event will agree that Maura and Mick Jones do a great organising job. For full details, give Mick a call on 087 2787044.

The second vintage and classic sale of the year will take place in Kilkenny on Saturday the 29th of October; this event is held in the great facility of the Kilkenny car boot sale indoor venue, just a few miles from Kilkenny on the Callan Road, a simply brilliant venue for an indoor event (and as I have said before, serves a great breakfast also!). The event has increased in size, and the autojumble section is getting better with each passing year. At the last event there were a number of cars sold, so contrary to common opinion any vintage vehicle that is in good condition and priced right will sell. There were some excellent bargains to be had last time around, so why not head to Kilkenny on Saturday the 29th of October to see what you can pick up; remember, the weather doesn’t matter as it’s mostly indoors.
An Open Day will be held at the Opel showrooms of Kevin O’Leary Motor Group in Bandon, Co. Cork on Saturday the 10th of September from Noon to 4.30 pm. The event is being held in association with the Opel Owners’ Club of Ireland, and is an indication of the close and friendly relationship between the dealer and the club; only a few weeks ago the club held their annual run, which the Kevin O’Leary Group co-sponsored, and which had a total of 84 cars participating, from a 1964 Holden to a 2011 Insignia. So, on Saturday the 10th of September why not call in to the Kevin O’Leary Opel showrooms in Bandon to see the old and new together; there will be some rally cars (including a very famous Circuit of Ireland Rally winner), and a new sporty model not yet seen in the dealers’ showrooms. Refreshments will be served, there will be something to keep everyone amused, and a great day is assured for all. For details on the event, call Ted O’Connell, Chairperson of the Opel Owners’ Club of Ireland, on 086 3256751 or email tedoconnell1@gmail.com.
