Irish Vintage Scene Issue 215
The cover of the May 2024 edition of Irish Vintage Scene features a family car from the sixties and seventies that’s rarely seen in this country anymore. The owner of this Volkswagen Type 3 Variant sought it out thanks to his memories of his father’s example bought new in 1968, and has enjoyed learning the ropes with this, his first classic car. What’s more, this particular VW has enjoyed a very travelled life, moving from Germany to Baghdad early in its life, and driving all the way back through Europe before eventually settling in Dublin in the early eighties. Our second feature car was also a popular family motor in its day, but survives in far greater numbers – however you won’t come across many Ford Anglia 105Es exactly like this one, as it spent three decades in storage before being awoken from its slumber by its current owner, who has retained its time-worn, barn-find appearance.
This month’s featured tractor looks like a common or garden Massey Ferguson 135 at first glance, but closer inspection reveals it’s actually a 133, one of only 5,000 believed to have been built in the Banner Lane factory in Coventry. Sold new in Co. Leitrim in 1972, it worked at the local creamery before ending up in its current ownership almost twenty years ago, and it’s remained in extremely original condition. Our commercial feature is another VW, this time an extremely rare, Irish-assembled 1964 VW Type 2 van that worked with the P&T (the precursor to An Post) before ending up sitting in a field rusting away for twenty years. Its current owner brought it back from past the brink of doom, and has it back on the road. And finally, our featured motorcycle is a beautiful 1970 BSA Starfire that holds a special significance for its owner. Lots of the usual favourites are in there too, so don’t miss out!
