What’s in issue 105 February 2015

The February 2015 edition of Irish Vintage Scene (Issue 105) is on sale now, and as ever is packed with a huge range of fascinating vehicle features. On the cover this month is a gorgeous Porsche 912 that’s recently been restored in Co. Galway; its period Golden Green colour and chrome trim make it a real eye-catcher, yet this four-cylinder model is a lot easier to live with than its more famous 911 sibling. Our second car feature brings us the story of one man’s passion for the Fiat 127; Bob Roe has built up a fantastic collection of cars and parts over the years, and with his family just as enthusiastic it looks like this is only set to continue. And, to round off our car features this month we look at a beautiful and rare Ford Model B from 1932, which has an interesting Irish history and a current owner that really lives the vintage lifestyle.

Our main tractor feature this month showcases Dinny Joe Molloy from Co. Laois and his quirky Steyr T84, which boasts a fantastic and recently-restored 1961 JF reaper/binder on the back and an even more impressive pair of goat’s horns on the front! We also take a look at a diesel-engined Fordson E27N, known colloquially to most as a ‘High-Nelly Major’, a tractor that sparks huge nostalgia in a great many people today. Our feature motorcycle this month is an unusual one, as on the surface it looks like a WW2 Harley-Davidson WLA but in fact it hides very modern mechanicals. Rounding off our highly varied stories in this issue, our commercial feature looks at a 1957 VW minibus that was restored to stunning condition in Australia before its Irish owner shipped it back home with him a couple of years ago.

Events-wise we’ve a huge array of reports this month including the Swords Classic Car Sale, Show & Autojumble, the DeCourcey Harvest Festival and the successful Ferguson tractor world record event in Burt, Co. Donegal. All of our usual attractions are in there too, so you won’t want to miss the February 2015 issue of Irish Vintage Scene; get yours today!

Even though it was originally intended to be a cheaper and less-complicated sibling to its legendary brother, the 911, in more recent times the Porsche 912 has become a collector’s item in its own right, and is highly prized amongst Porsche enthusiasts and classic car collectors alike. Looking at John Dooley’s recently restored example it’s easy to see why.

Some enthusiasts like to mothball and pamper their classic tractors and implements in their retirement, putting their working days behind them. However some, like Dinny Joe Molloy, like nothing more than to keep them in proper working order, just as they were intended.

All in a Roe

Once an extremely common sight on our roads, the Fiat 127 has now become the polar opposite, even at classic events. However, one Co. Wicklow enthusiast is doing his best to save as many as he can, single-handedly.

The wartime Harley Davidson WLA is a true classic in the motorcycle world, and is highly collectable today. However, when Noel Connolly wasn’t able to get his hands on the one he wanted, he decided to create his own!

BusBus Beauty

Despite its humble upbringings the split-screen VW Type 2 has today become one of the most desirable and recognisable classic vehicles around. However, one restored to the level of Adrian Cullinane’s 1957 bus will attract even more attention than usual.
