What’s in issue 106 March 2015

The March 2015 edition of Irish Vintage Scene (Issue 106) is on sale now, and is packed with yet more interesting vehicle features. On the cover this month is a stunning Ford Cortina Mk3 that amazingly hasn’t left its first family since it was sold in 1975. A glitzy 1600XL model, its long-running restoration has recently been completed by the son-in-law of the original owner, but as you’ll see it wasn’t an easy project due to the relative scarcity of Mk3 Cortina parts, which really held up its event debut. Our second feature car is another unique family tale, this time of a 1980 Toyota Corolla that has found its way back to its first owner having been restored by another enthusiast. It’s a complicated story with an Australian twist involving good old Facebook, so you’ll just have to read the feature to find out more!

Our main tractor feature this month isn’t run-of-the-mill by any stretch of the imagination, as this beautifully restored machine doesn’t have wheels, but tracks; the big six-cylinder David Brown 50TD is one of the most sought-after of classic DBs, and this one has been done to a standard that impresses on every level. Our second tractor is another unusual machine, a fifties twin-cylinder Hanomag that has been restored to a tee by a well-known German tractor fan in Co. Kerry. Motorcycle-wise this month we bring you a gorgeous 1960 NSU Supermax, an example of one of the finest 250s of all time, while our commercial feature looks at a 1973 Mini Van that’s been at the receiving end of some subtle upgrades during its recent restoration.

We’ve lots of event reports for you this month as usual, including the Gerard Murphy Memorial Run in Co. Wexford, the Inistioge Vintage Rally in Co. Kilkenny and the IVVMCC Autojumble in Leopardstown, Dublin, and all of our usual attractions are in there too, so you won’t want to miss the March 2015 issue of Irish Vintage Scene; get yours today at any good newsagent or by clicking the button below!

CortinaOne of the Family

When Denis McSweeney bought this Ford Cortina 1.6XL in 1975, little did the car know that it was destined to become an integral part of the family, never to be sold. Today, it’s recently emerged from an in-depth restoration and looks better than it has for decades.

Track & fieldTrack & Field

The big six-cylinder David Brown 50D is one of the rarest and probably the most sought-after classic DB model of all. However, even more interesting again is the tracked 50TD version. To check out this beautifully-restored example, we return to Philip Greene’s collection in Co. Laois.

Toyota Tribulations

How many of us would be willing to go to all the trouble and expense of restoring a classic we’d been looking for for years, only to let it be sold shortly after its completion? Well Liam Guilfoyle just has, but when you hear the reason you will understand why he had to let it go.

It might have been expensive and unusual-looking in comparison to its competitors in the 250 sector, but with 18hp on tap and peerless build quality the NSU Supermax was a cut above the rest, as this Sligo-registered beauty attests.

Minivan (10)Outside the Box

The Mini Van was one of the best ‘boxes on wheels’ you could buy yourself, with all of the packaging genius of the Mini saloon but with extra load space in the back. No stranger to a bit of packaging genius, Ivor Barker has now restored a beautiful example for himself.
