The Irish Italian

FordA likeable small family car from Fiat’s rear-engine era, the 850 was a popular seller all over the world and more capable than perhaps it looked. While its image is undeniably Italian, the 850, like many of its stablemates, was assembled in Ireland in its day for the Irish market, including this rare survivor.

Lanz Ahoy

Jim Kelly of Co. Laois is well-known far and wide for his enthusiasm for Lanz tractors, which stems from his childhood days on his family farm. This month we take a look at the fruits of his latest work – a Bulldog 28 tractor and matching muck spreader.

Tail Gunner

FordThe name Mercedes-Benz conjures up images of iconic models like the 540K, the 300SL Gullwing, the classic Pagoda roofed SLs – the list goes on. None of these were particularly modest, and so it was a surprise when, at the Berlin Motor Show of February 1934, Mercedes unveiled its frugal rear-engined 130H. This Irish-restored example took top honours at this year’s AXA National Classic Car Show.

Boxing Clever

FordLong-considered sturdy but unexciting, classic BMW motorcycles have enjoyed a massive surge in popularity in recent years as their elegance, reliability and design excellence is finally recognised. This R75/5 has recently been beautifully restored to richly exemplify all of these virtues.

White Goods

FordClassic commercials don’t come much smaller than the iconic Mini Van, which became as much of a legend in its own right as the saloon upon which it was based. Chris Greene certainly thinks so, as he restored this ’78 example to use as his wedding car!
