What’s in issue 99 August 2014

cover 99 smallThe August 2014 edition of Irish Vintage Scene (Issue 99) is on sale now, and as usual is packed with a wide variety of interesting features. On the cover this month is a classic that will bring back fond memories for a great many people; the Hillman Imp was a popular family car in Ireland during the sixties and seventies, and sure enough the owner of this example remembers well the blue Imp that his dad bought in Dublin in 1972. Our second car feature looks at some very unusual variants of the iconic ‘sit-up-and-beg’ Ford Anglia; this soft-top tourer and roadster pickup originally hail from Australia, and are two models that we never saw on European shores. They’re now both in the stewardship of a well-known sidevalve Ford collector in Co. Cavan, and so are in the best of hands.

Our main tractor feature this month is the fantastic tale of one man’s fifty-year admiration of his neighbour’s Allis-Chalmers WC, which has always been in the same West Cork parish from new. He finally got his hands on his dream tractor last August, and restored it in just six months despite meeting some serious hurdles with the engine. We also feature a lovely pair of classic David Brown tractors, namely a 995 and a 1210, which are fine specimens from a now sadly-defunct manufacturer.

You wouldn’t have to be a motorcycle enthusiast to be attracted to the 1941 Harley-Davidson we feature this month; this pre-war WL has been sympathetically restored, but with a twist, and now looks like a fifties police bike. And, our commercial vehicle looks at a truck that was a common sight on Irish roads in the sixties and early seventies, but is now practically extinct: an Austin FFK140, and an original Irish one at that.

With full event reports from the ‘Ireland Heads West for Emma’ Classic & Vintage Show in Galway Racecourse, the Innishannon Steam & Vintage Rally, the Norman Pratt Memorial Run and lots more, plus all of our usual attractions like Laid to Rust, Your Letters and News & Events, you won’t want to miss the August 2014 issue of Irish Vintage Scene; get yours today!

Decade to Decide…

With fond memories of his dad’s old Hillman Imp, Jimmy O’Reilly bought his 1976 Imp Super back in 2001, but it sat in storage for ten years before he worked out what to do with it. Thankfully, he chose the restoration route, and the result speaks for itself.

.

Allis Charmer

This 1947 Allis-Chalmers WC has resided in the same Co. Cork parish all its life, and has just been restored by its childhood admirer after over fifty years sitting in storage.

Anglia Aficionado

For anyone that thought all Anglias were the same, meet Eugene Markey and his unusual Tourer and Roadster Utility models, which arrived on these shores all the way from Australia.

.

On The Beat

For American bike fans, the Harley-Davidson WL is one of the true greats. The forerunner to the WLA field bike made famous during World War Two, the WL’s simplicity makes it easy to customise, as this police-style example proves.

Running in the Family

Every little boy has a lorry or two in the toy box at some time or another, but some don’t let their love of commercial vehicles rest there. For some, it gets in the blood and stays. It also helps if your family are hauliers, and Donal O’Sullivan from Dunshauglin in Co. Meath falls into this category without a doubt.
