Description

The March 2016 issue of Irish Vintage Scene (Issue 118) is on sale now, and continues our massive giveaway for one lucky subscriber worth €2,000 to mark our tenth year in existence.

This month’s cover car is a real family favourite, being a very familiar saloon on Irish roads in the seventies and early eighties – despite its rather unusual styling the Renault 12 was affordable, dependable, comfy and spacious, all qualities that saw versions built under licence in various parts of the world up to 2000. The example we bring you this month has been brought back to as-new condition by a former Renault apprentice mechanic, who developed a fondness for the model when they were brand new on the showroom floor. Our second feature car is a complete contrast, a huge straight-eight Horch limousine that was the pinnacle of German technology and luxury when it was built in 1928. Unusually, this one also has an Irish history, and is thought to be the only surviving one of its type.

Our tractor features this month are a little out of the ordinary, as both have been modified above and beyond their factory specifications by skilled and knowledgeable owners: the first is a Fordson Dexta that’s now powered by a six-cylinder air-cooled Deutz compressor engine, which has doubled the tractor’s original number of cylinders and added 100hp to its output! The second is a Ferguson 20 diesel that’s skilfully and neatly been converted to four-wheel-drive, something that Harry Ferguson surprisingly never got around to doing himself.

On two wheels, our motorcycle feature this month bring us the story of the pre-war Omega motorcycle, while our commercial feature looks at one of the most interesting classic trucks you’ve never heard of: the Rowe Hillmaster. An extensive list of show reports includes the National Steam Rally at Stradbally, the Wholly Ghost Rolls-Royce Tour and the 84th National Ploughing Championships, and all of the usual favourites are in there too, plus our €2,000 giveaway, so don’t miss out – get your March 2016 issue of Irish Vintage Scene today!
