Lifetime Escort

Lifetime EscortThe Escort – undoubtedly an iconic car, especially in Ireland. Even though it has been well over twenty years since the name-plate has graced a showroom, people still mistakenly refer to it when discussing the Focus, its replacement from 1998 onwards. That’s the appeal the name still has even today. As we celebrate fifty years of the Mk1, we meet with Jim O’Donovan from Limerick, who’s had them for forty years.

Series Production

Series ProductionA famous tractor both during production and in preservation, the Field Marshall is an icon from a long-past era in agriculture when your prowess driving a belt pulley was almost as important as horsepower at the wheels. Pat Kelly from Co. Wexford didn’t know a whole lot about Field Marshalls when he bought his first project many years ago, but he knows them inside-out now after restoring four of them in the years that followed.

Lady in the Fast Lane

Lady in the Fast LaneLong before the women’s lib movement had resorted to burning intimate parts of their clothing, Rosemary Smith was making her own statement about a woman’s place in society. She chose to do it in one of the most sacred bastions of the alpha male, by competing in motor sport. Not content with being a mere participant, she would ruffle a few feathers by beating some of the very best of her male counterparts. Sixty years on and she is still at the wheel, and has recently launched her long awaited autobiography Driven.

Universal Appeal

Universal AppealWhen Nuffield unveiled their all-new Universal range of tractors in 1948 the entire tractor industry sat up and took notice, for this upstart newcomer had the might of Morris Motors behind it. Even though Nuffield eventually failed as part of British Leyland, their machines did take on the established tractor makers in convincing fashion, and these poppy orange beauties are popular in preservation. This beautiful 10/60 shows us how good they can be made to look.

Caffeine Fix

Caffeine FixWhat do you do if you want modern levels of performance but in a show-stopping, classic-style package? Harry Harrison’s solution was to build his own dream café racer from a classic Suzuki GSX-R 750, incorporating more bespoke touches than you can shake a stick at.

On Patrol

On PatrolOnce an everyday sight in Ireland, whether at the mart or on the army range, the Nissan Patrol was a bastion of reliability and toughness. However the tinworm claimed most too early, and today they are an extremely rare sight. This low-mileage stunner was pampered from new by the Civil Defence, and has recently been refurbished back to its original civilian specification.
