What’s in issue 107 April 2015

The April 2015 edition of Irish Vintage Scene (Issue 107) is on sale now, and as ever is packed with a huge range of fascinating vehicle features. On the cover this month is a beautiful example of a real family favourite: the Morris Minor 1000. You wouldn’t think it to look at it, but this particular car’s restoration was completed way back in 2010, and its purchase was fuelled by the owner’s memories of the Morris Minor van that his dad drove many years ago. Our second feature car is something that looks very unusual to our Irish eyes, but yet would have been as common a sight on its native roads in forties/fifties France as a Ford Prefect or Morris 8 would have been here; this Peugeot 202 has a very well-documented history behind it, and is now treasured by its Irish owners. We also bring you a progress update on the engine rebuild of a 1928 Essex, which is on track for its completion deadline in April but with a whole lot of work still left to do.

Our main tractor feature this month tells the lovely story of a 1953 Farmall Cub that has lived on the same farm ever since it was new. Hailing from Moylough in Co. Galway, this little machine has been cherished from day one, and for the last 25 years has been a seasoned and successful participant in vintage ploughing competitions. Our second feature tractor comes from the same stable, but thirty years later; this early eighties International 585 from Co. Tyrone has been refreshed rather than restored, as it was in good condition to start out with, and wears a quite rare Economy L cab. Our feature motorcycle this month looks at a real survivor – a 1934 Rudge 500 Special that’s never been restored – while rounding off our highly varied stories in this issue is a 1982 Scania 82M truck that has returned to its original owners and is unlikely to ever leave.

Events-wise we’ve plenty of reports this month including the recent Fingal Vintage Society’s Ford Heritage Night, the Moynalty Steam Threshing Festival and even a vintage machinery meet from Wisconsin, USA! All of our usual attractions are in there too, so you won’t want to miss the April 2015 issue of Irish Vintage Scene; get yours today!

The evergreen Morris Minor is one of the most fondly-remembered classic family saloons out there, a sentiment echoed by Paddy McGrath from Co. Louth, who’s restored this lovely ’69 to fulfi l some childhood memories.

With its small size, off set design and bright red colour the Farmall Cub is a sure-fi re contender for the title of “cutest tractor ever”. However, those doe-eyed looks belie a really capable machine that could punch above its weight, something the Glynn family from Moylough, Co. Galway would readily confi rm.

Bring Pierre Home

Damien Rogan has a great interest in classics, and over the years has bombarded his wife, Noelle, with pictures of cars he would like to buy. He’s been politely knocked back most of the time, mainly due to Noelle’s disinterest in cars, but that was until she saw this little 1949 Peugeot 202.

Even though their motorcycles were hailed in their time for their engineering quality and competition prowess, Rudge Whitworth was out of business by 1940. This month we look at a 1934 500 Special that’s not an “oily rag” restoration, but an amazingly untouched survivor.

Bought new by lifetime haulier Ned Kiely in 1982, this Scania 82M has never left its locality. Even though it was sold in 1992, it’s been back in the Kielys’ ownership since 2001 and has been treasured ever since.
