What's in issue 98 July 2014

Screen Shot 2014-06-12 at 10.59.21The July 2014 edition of Irish Vintage Scene (Issue 98) is now on sale and, like every other month, is full of interesting stories, news and features. On the cover this month is a particularly desirable machine for many classic enthusiasts, and one with a unique history; John Pollock (no relation to the Editor!) bought this Ford Capri 3000GT XLR brand new in 1971, but when he decided to buy a newer model in 1981 he put the older one in storage, where it was to lie until 2008 when its storage garage was set for redevelopment. John’s restored it since then, and it’s now a real specimen. Our second feature car is from a very different era, a military-version 1937 Austin Seven from a time when the world was facing the prospect of war. This rare machine has been restored following its discovery sitting in a hedge on the Isle of Man!

Our main tractor feature this month brings us the story of a 1960 International B-275 that’s been on the same Tyrone farm all its life, and has been restored by its original owner. We also feature one of the great favourites of the Irish classic tractor scene, a Massey-Ferguson 35X, which again has come in for an extensive rebuild in the last couple of years.

For motorcycle enthusiasts we’re a real beauty in the shape of a 1949 Ariel NG1, which really tried its current owner’s determination when its mechanical condition turned out to be anything but described. And, for classic commercial fans and collectable fans alike we bring you the story of an absolutely gorgeous 1950 Austin Loadstar travelling shop, which has recently been saved from the grave to become one of the centrepieces of the Glenview Folk Museum in Co. Leitrim.

With full event reports including VJMC Classic Motorcycle Show at the National Event Centre, the Thurles Order of Malta Tractor World Record Attempt and the New Ross Classic & Sports Car Show, plus all of our usual attractions like Laid to Rust, Your Letters, News & Events and lots, lots more, you won’t want to miss the July 2014 issue of Irish Vintage Scene; get yours today!

Eviction NoticeCarpri mrk 1_0032

This month we catch up with a Capri that may well have been lost forever, had it not been for an eviction notice driven by the hype of the Celtic Tiger era and a developer wanting to build apartments. Take a spin with us as we get the lowdown on this stunning one-owner 3000GT XLR.

International TractorInternational Intrigue

What is the connection between a former international goal-scoring footballer, one Gerry Armstrong and a B-275 International tractor? Well, the answer is that the former footballing ace is the grandson of the original owner of this Tyrone-registered machine.

After picking up this 1949 Ariel NG1 at the Stafford Classic Motorcycle Show Lionel Watts found that its previous “restoration” wasn’t all it was cracked up to be, leading to three years of work and expense to bring it up to its current beautiful standard.

Although practically extinct today, the travelling shop was an integral part of rural Irish life for generations. To ensure that its memory lives on, the Glenview Folk Museum in Co. Leitrim have tackled the restoration of one such shop, and the results are fantastic.

Back in April a letter from a reader tipped us off about an amazing toy display in Powerscourt House in Wicklow. We just had to go along to find out more, and we weren’t disappointed.
