June Issue 61

Neighbourhood Watch

We all had one or two cars that we would have just loved to own as youngsters, or that you would promise yourself when you get rich.

Well what normally happens is that the car will not survive until the dream of riches comes true, but this month we have a classic tale of one man being reunited with a such a car after it sat in a garage on a busy Dublin street for almost thirty years. Andy Hennessy, an avid car collector, received what can only be described as a once in a lifetime chance to buy a car he remembers from his childhood neighbourhood; a 1963 Fiat 1100D that was assembled in Dublin. Andrew finds out more.

In The Green

This month both of our feature tractors are green, but are certainly not from the same stable, as you might expect.

‘In The Green’ is the story of a Massey Ferguson 35X that was actually supplied by the factory in this colour. It is an industrial model, and was built by special order for Kent County Council in the UK. It is now in Co. Tipperary, restored and owned by Jim Hassey who has provided Andrew with a picture of what he started with, and boy did it look bad!

Jailbar Rock

This month’s commercial feature is brought to us by Carl Czanik, who came across this beautiful Ford V8 truck some time ago at the Fingal Vintage Show. Nicknamed the ‘Jailbar Ford’ because of the shape of the front grille, these Ford V8 trucks are really thin on the ground nowadays in their US homeland, so it’s great to get a chance to feature an original Irish one that was bought new in Smithfield for £750 by the Fynes family. Believe it or not, it’s still in the same family today.

Spring Fresh

This story sure is as fresh as the restoration of this motorcycle, as it was only completed days before the photoshoot.

The owner of this Triumph SD, Alan Wilson, is well-known thanks to his motorcycle racing exploits down through the years; he has owned this original Cork-registered bike for 44 years, and it is well known as it has taken part in vintage events all over the country. The Triumph SD is a much sought-after machine, and is described by many as the Rolls-Royce of motorcycles; after reading Andrew’s feature, I think you will agree with that comparison.
