July 2010, Issue 50

–       PORSCHE PAIR: The two superb Porsche 356B restorations we feature side-by-side this month represent the collective efforts of two dedicated enthusiasts, who, unknown to each other, had been working away on their own individual projects on opposite sides of the country. Norbert Sheerin catalogues the lengths required by both men in getting these two beautiful coupes back on the road.

–       VINE FIND: Tractors have been built for all kinds of specific uses throughout the years, and one type that is quite common in Europe is the narrow ‘vineyard’ style of machine. For obvious reasons you don’t come across very many in Ireland however, so when Tom Heavey came across this original Irish Massey Ferguson 135 Vineyard he just had to track down the owner for a full feature.

–       FLAVOUR OF THE MONTH: When looking for the basis for building an ice-cream van a Mini would surely be the last vehicle you’d consider, right? Well funnily enough, its tight turning circle and good fuel economy made the Mini ice-cream van a sought-after vehicle by those in the frozen confectionery trade, just another example of the Mini’s suitability to practically any role. This month Stephen McEvoy catches up with the owner of a beautifully-restored example.

–       THE MP6 STORY PT.2: In our January 2010 issue (Number 44) Enda Curran ran us through his tale of the discovery of an extremely rare Marshall MP6 tractor, which had lain unused in undergrowth for decades. Although in extremely poor condition, the tractor is the only Irish-registered example of a production run of 197, and so it just had to be saved from the grave. This month Enda fills us in on the project’s progress, and the work involved.

–       CELTIC SPIRIT: One of the very few Irish motorcycle makers, the Celtic Cycle Company of Dublin built a run of single-cylinder machines in the early days of the twentieth century. Now they are all but extinct, but this beautiful example keeps their memory alive after being meticulously restored by a descendant of the original maker.

–       GREAT EIGHTS: The flathead Ford V8 is one of the most revered of all American engines, and had a lot of friends in the haulage trade in Ireland right up to the fifties and sixties. Andrew Pollock meets with the owner of two fantastic V8 trucks, one of which is an original, Cork-built example.
